Tag Archives: Summer Reading
The Putnam County Library’s mission is to provide and protect access to services and information in a variety of formats that promote lifelong learning, and we place a special emphasis on encouraging young children to develop an interest in reading. We work toward this mission all year long, but our Summer Reading Program gives us a the chance to really get kids excited about reading and learning.
The goal of our summer reading program is to increase literacy and stop the summer slide in children’s reading skills. During the summer months, many children get out of the habit of reading and as a result, their skills can regress. Reading just twenty minutes a day can help them improve their comprehension skills, familiarity with text, and be better prepared for the coming school year. Library staff are happy to help you select books that are age appropriate and match your child’s interests and reading abilities. Children ages five and up can sign up for their own library card with a parent or guardian present.
This year’s summer reading theme is On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! To encourage curiosity, promote health, and increase reading motivation, we are offering free recreational and educational summer reading programs for all ages. Unfortunately space and supplies may be limited at programs. A full schedule of events and sponsors for programs at each of our four libraries can be found at pclibrary.org. The funding for the Summer Reading Program is made possible in large part by the Putnam County Library Friends.

Summer Reading at Your Library
Summer Reading Programs are still going strong at the Algood, Baxter, Cookeville, and Monterey Libraries. So far, approximately 950 children and teens have participated in our programs, and it is not too late to sign your child up. We would like to extend thanks to the caring parents, grandparents, and adults for bringing children and teens to our programs and sharing their love of reading and learning. The Library System would also like to thank our community partners who have donated their resources and time to present programs at our Library Branches. They include the Putnam County School System, Algood Police Department, Cookeville Police Department, Monterey Police Department, Baxter Fire Department, Cookeville Fire Department, WSMV’s Snowbird, Cookeville Regional Medical Center’s Therapy Dog Program, Putnam County Health Department, Army National Guard, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. This year’s programs are made possible by generous donations from Putnam County Library Friends, Cookeville Arts Council, Dollar General Literacy Foundation, First National Bank of Tennessee, Discovery Depot, IWC Food Service, Chick-Fil-A, McDonald’s of the Upper Cumberland, Cheddar’s Casual Café, and the IRIS Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America.
