Summer Reading Programs for the Week of June 5, 2017

Lunch at the Putnam County Library

Learning and good nutrition doesn’t end when school lets out! The Putnam County Library is offering free meals for anyone between the ages of 0 and 18 every Monday, Thursday, and Friday at 11 a.m. during the months of June and July as part of our Summer Reading Program.

This program helps provide nutritious meals to children so they are better fueled with healthy food to learn and grow. As a requirement of participation, food must be consumed on site. This program is done in partnership with the Putnam County School System and made possible by the TN Department of Human Services through the USDA Summer Meals Program.

Putnam County Library Summer Reading Events

The Children’s Library will host Family Creative Learning Workshops this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. Using PBS KIDS ScratchJr, kids can create their own interactive stories and games featuring their favorite characters from Wild Kratts, Nature Cat, WordGirl and Peg + Cat! The storytelling possibilities are endless with this creative coding app. This program is appropriate for children ages 5-8. Family participation encouraged.

Join us this Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. as the Science Guys show kids how science builds a better world! Kids will use pulleys, defy gravity, have a tug-o-war, and launch a catapult! This program is recommended for ages five and up. This program will be adapted for a teen audience on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Everyone’s favorite teen summer reading tradition is back! Meet at CyberTag this Thursday from 1-2 p.m. for some team-building fun. This event is free and open to ages 12-17. CyberTag is located at 41 South Cedar Ave, Cookeville, TN 38501.

Book Clubs – Brought to you by the PCL!

Here at the Putnam County Library, we believe that there is something really special about sharing a book with others. One really fun way to do that is by participating in a book club. To try to help others build their own reading communities, the PCL offers book club kits for check-out. Most kits contain 10-12 copies of the title and a book discussion folder to help guide your club’s discussions. The kits check-out for 30 days at a time, rather than the standard two weeks, to give the patron time to use the kit with their group. Currently, the library owns over 50 book club kits, with plans to expand this collection in the near future.

Some of our more popular kit titles include Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Room by Emma Donoghue, and The Art of Racing In the Rain by Garth Stein. You can find the book kits in the catalog by a simple search using the words ‘book kit’. When you find the kit you want, ask a library staff member at the front desk to assist you.

Also, if you are interested in book clubs, please check out our First Friday Book Club, which is an open club that meets at 3pm on the first Friday of each month. The selection for May’s meeting is State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. Copies of the book selection for the month are available on a first come, first serve basis at the front desk.
