CCAF 2021 Community Anthology

This week was our ninth annual Cookeville Comic Arts Festival, and once again we encouraged local comic creators to submit short comics for us to share. And here is the result! Sixteen pages of new comics from nine different artists of all ages and experience levels, all collected together for your enjoyment. There are paper copies available (while supplies last!) at the Cookeville library, but we also have a digital edition to download.

We hope you enjoy it!

Norbert’s Reading Rangers: Week 2

The Children’s Library pet, Norbert the bearded dragon, gets ready to learn about salamanders.

Complete weekly virtual and at-home activities to become a Norbert’s Reading Ranger! Once you’ve earned your badge, pick it up at the Children’s Library between June 28th and July 10th.

For Week 2 of Norbert’s Reading Rangers, we’ve got activities that are all about wildlife. Complete at least 3 of the following challenges, and don’t forget to participate in Weeks 3 and 4 to qualify for your Norbert’s Reading Ranger badge! If you missed Week 1, you can still go back and complete it

1. Watch Smokieee’s Black Bear Journaling video to learn about black bears.

2. Complete the National Park Foundation’s Wildlife Word Search. Don’t have a printer? Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a copy of the word search!

3. Learn about bears by watching Smokieee’s “We Are Bears” music video.

4. Color Smokieee’s Pileated Woodpecker Coloring Page. Visit the Children’s Library if you need a printed copy or want to borrow some crayons!

Children’s SRP Programs: Week of 6/7

Here’s a look at what’s happening at the Children’s Library both in person and virtually this week as part of our Summer Reading Program!

In-Person

Jack and the Beanstalk Craft: Visit the Children’s Library to receive a craft kit featuring the supplies and instructions you need to plant a seed in a planter that you decorate!

Beary Delicious S’mores Snack Kit: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a snack kit containing the ingredients to make Beary Delicious S’mores (pictured below)! Gluten-free options are available. Ingredients include graham crackers (regular and gluten-free), marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Yum!

Animal Yoga with Sprouting Yogis (Monday, 6/7): Enjoy the first of 3 fun-filled yoga video sessions with yoga instructor Laura Burgin of Sprouting Yogis, and visit the Children’s Library to pick up an accompanying activity bag! Practice animal-themed poses as you move your body and calm your mind. This video will be available on the PCL YouTube page. Link to Facebook Event

Between the Pages (Tuesday, 6/8): Children’s author Alane Adams’ Between the Pages educational video series teaches children how to write great stories using fun videos and activity guides for all ages. This week’s episode will be posted on the PCL WordPress and Facebook pages and remain available on demand afterward.

Episode Description: In “Part Two: Before Page One,” Alane discusses some of the important concepts an author has to think about before they start writing, including title, genre, setting, and world building.

Animal Tails Storytime for K-2nd grade (Wednesday, 6/9): Watch Zoo Atlanta’s storybook reading of Possum’s Harvest Moon and follow their activity guide as you explore the animal world through literature. The video and guide will be posted on the PCL WordPress and Facebook pages.

Animal Tails Storytime for 1st-5th grade (Thursday, 6/10): Watch Zoo Atlanta’s storybook reading of Verdi and complete their activity guide as you learn about green tree pythons. The video and guide will be posted on the PCL WordPress and Facebook pages.

Zambezi River Hippo Adventure at the Memphis Zoo (Live via Zoom at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, 6/11): In this livestream program, visit the Memphis Zoo’s Zambezi River Hippo Camp exhibit, peek behind-the-scenes with the one and only Zoo Dude, learn about the river system, and understand how animals (like hippos) can thrive in a river habitat! Bob Tarter’s Virtual Animal Show: Episode TBA (Friday, 6/11): Meet amazing animals and go behind the scenes with Bob Tarter in this virtual animal show. The video will be posted on the PCL YouTube page and will remain available afterward.

LEGO Challenge: Complete this week’s LEGO challenge and share a picture of your creation for inclusion in our online gallery! This week’s theme is Animal Habitats: Use whatever LEGOs you have available to create a model of any animal home! All picture submissions are due by Sunday, 6/13.

Norbert’s Reading Rangers: Week 1

Complete weekly virtual and at-home activities to become a Norbert’s Reading Ranger! Once you’ve earned your badge, pick it up at the Children’s Library between June 28th and July 10th.

To kick off Norbert’s Reading Rangers, we’ve got activities that are all about exploring nature through your senses. Complete at least 3 of the following challenges, and don’t forget to participate in Weeks 2-4 to qualify for your Norbert’s Reading Ranger badge!

  1. Relax with the soothing sounds of Smoky Mountains streams with this video by Smokieee’s.

2. Complete as much as you can of the National Park Service’s Junior Ranger Sound Explorer activity booklet. Use the key to check your answers.

3. Explore nature through sound with this video by Smokieee’s.

4. Color at least 1 coloring sheet from the Smokieee’s 5 Senses Coloring Pages set. Visit the Children’s Library if you would like a paper copy of the coloring sheets or need to borrow some crayons!

5. Complete the National Park Service’s Junior Ranger matching activity featuring birds and trees found in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Visit the Children’s Library if you would like a paper copy or need to borrow a pencil!

6. Take a virtual hike to a waterfall in the Smoky Mountains through Smokieee’s video.

7. Complete the National Park Service’s Junior Ranger hidden object activity depicting a scene from the Smokies. Visit the Children’s Library if you would like a paper copy or need to borrow a pencil!

8. Read a non-fiction book about nature. Need a more specific topic? Look for a book about a national park!

9. Listen to PARKTRACKS. (From the link: The National Park Foundation and the National Park Service invite you to tune into PARKTRACKS, an innovative audio experience to help counter the hustle & bustle of city life, and tap into the trends of tranquility and mindfulness. PARKTRACKS will virtually transport you to national parks across the country with sounds captured by the National Park Service’s Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division.)

Children’s SRP Programs: Week of 5/31

Here’s a look at what’s happening at the Children’s Library both in person and virtually this week as part of our Summer Reading Program!

In-Person

Roll a Story Activity: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a Roll a Story Activity Kit featuring a six-sided di and a story prompt sheet. If you submit your story at the Children’s Library front desk, we’ll publish it on the PCL WordPress page!

A-Z Animal Craft: Visit the Children’s Library to receive an A-Z Animal Craft sheet featuring a random letter of the alphabet. Then draw and color an animal that’s name begins with the letter on your sheet (antelope for A, blobfish for B, etc.). If you turn in your artwork at the Children’s Library front desk, we’ll proudly display it on our walls!

Animal Feed Trail Mix Snack Kit: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a snack kit containing all the ingredients you need for Animal Feed Trail Mix! Gluten-free options are available. Ingredients include pretzel sticks, Cheerios, Milk Chocolate M&M’s (which may contain nuts), and animal crackers or bunny crackers.

Kitty Craft Kit: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a Kitty Craft Kit with all the supplies and instructions you need to make multiple types of cat toys! Make them for your own cat, or donate them to the Cookeville/Putnam County Animal Shelter by bringing them to any branch of the Putnam County Library System or directly to the animal shelter. Each kit also includes a white bandana that can be decorated for and donated to the dogs available for adoption at the shelter.

Between the Pages (Tuesday, 6/1): Children’s author Alane Adams’ Between the Pages educational video series teaches children how to write great stories using fun videos and activity guides for all ages. Episode Description: “Part One: Meet Alane” introduces viewers to the overall theme of the video series, asking them to think about what a book actually is. It explains how Alane became an author and prompts students to consider the first steps an author takes before writing.

Science Guys (rescheduled to Wednesday, 6/2): This interactive virtual science show by Mr. Bond’s Science Guys includes crowd-favorite experiments you’ll love to try at home! It will be posted on the PCL Facebook page and will be available for two weeks after its premiere.

Animal Tails Storytime for PreK-2nd grade (Wednesday, 6/2): Watch Zoo Atlanta’s storybook reading of The Salamander Room and follow their activity guide to build your own salamander habitat-themed sensory bin. The video and guide will be posted on the PCL WordPress and Facebook pages.

Animal Tails Storytime for K-5th grade (Thursday, 6/3): Watch Zoo Atlanta’s storybook reading of Giraffes Can’t Dance and explore with your child the difference between producers and consumers. The video and guide will be posted on the PCL WordPress and Facebook pages. 

Bob Tarter’s Virtual Animal Show: Life on the Farm with MBG (Friday, 6/4): Watch as Mary Beth Gunter takes you on a tour of her farm in North Mississippi. Learn about day-to-day life on the farm as you meet goats, pigs, dogs, and more! This video will be posted on the PCL YouTube page and will remain available afterward.

LEGO Challenge: Complete this week’s LEGO challenge and share a picture of your creation for inclusion in our online gallery! This week’s theme is Furry Friends: Use whatever LEGOs you have available to create any animal with fur! All picture submissions are due by Sunday, 6/6.

SRP 2021 Children’s Events This Week

Take-Home Activities and Giveaways

Adopt a Stuffed Animal Reading Pal: Visit the Children’s Library to adopt your very own stuffed animal. Give it a fur-ever home, and don’t forget to read it stories! Zebras, giraffes, polar bears, and pandas are available while supplies last.

Fortune Teller Craft: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a craft sheet you can use to make your own tiger or monster fortune teller (also known as a cootie catcher).

Kitty Craft Kit: Visit the Children’s Library to pick up a Kitty Craft Kit with all the supplies and instructions you need to make multiple types of cat toys! Animal Globetrotter Virtual Program with the Memphis Zoo: Kick off summer vacation with the Memphis Zoo this Friday, 5/28 @ 1:00 p.m.! Virtually travel the globe and meet three animals from three different habitats! In this livestream program, explore the adaptations these animals have for survival, the role they play in their ecosystems, and how to help animals everywhere from the comfort of your home. (Grades 1-5)
