Do you have old VHS tapes at home that you can no longer view? Maybe some 3.5 inch floppy discs but your computer no longer has a floppy drive? Perhaps boxes full of photo slides with nary a slide projector in sight? People are finding it harder and harder to preserve and share their family memories due to constantly shifting media technology and modern devices that can’t access the older formats. But Tennessee Tech University, the Cookeville History Museum, and your Putnam County Library are here to help you digitize your memories! The week of April 23rd-28th we will be hosting a Memory Lab at the Putnam County Library with staff and equipment capable of scanning and copying a vast multitude of physical formats and providing you with digital files.
We will have devices to digitize the following media:
- 3.5 inch floppies
- VHS and VHSC
- Audio Cassette
- Photographs, Negatives, and Slides
- Paper materials (scrapbook pages, recipes, letters, notes) up to 12” x 8.25”
Attendees are able to sign up for 2-hour sessions (limit 1 per person) and should keep in mind that audio and video copying will be done in real-time and will require setup (for instance one and a half hours of video will take right at two hours to digitize) so prioritize items accordingly. Please come prepared with a medium to transfer your new files to, such as USB flash drives, external hard drives, DVDR’s or pre-established cloud storage sites (be sure to have your log in information). It is recommended that attendees show up 15 minutes early for required paperwork.
The Memory Lab is a free service available to any community member age 18 or up. You may register for your session starting on April 18th by stopping by the circulation desk at the Putnam County Library, or by contacting them at firstname.lastname@example.org or 931-526-2416. In addition, we will have registration available at all of the Preservation Week seminars and workshops on April 18th, 20th and 21st.
